Belly dance also known as raks sharqui goes back thousands of years. The name belly dance derives from the french phrase " dance du ventre". This sensual dance was originally danced by women for women only. It is believed that the dance was danced for fertility purposes which were symbolic re-creations of giving birth, to modern belly dancing. Many believe it was gypsy tribes who first drew the dance out into the streets and developed it into theatre.
There are different types of belly dance such as Egyptian cabaret, American cabaret, Turkish and Tribal fusion are just some of many. Belly dancers also dance with props such as veils, swords, canes, candles, zills and isis wings. These props are used to create interest and drama to the dance.
